UNMUTE: Dubai’s Open Mic for Real-Life Stories
Some stories never make it into a business introduction. UNMUTE is Dubai’s invitation to share a real-life story — or simply listen — and make room for the everyday heroes carrying them.

What is UNMUTE’s open mic in Dubai?
UNMUTE is a community storytelling movement founded by Dr S Pujah. Its invitation is simple: an open mic for real-life stories, where a lived experience matters more than a polished performance. You can express interest in sharing a story, join as a listener, or help bring an evening to a community in Dubai and across the UAE.
If you are searching for an open mic in Dubai but do not have a comedy set, a song or a finished poem, this is a different doorway. You do not need to turn your life into entertainment. A memory, a turning point, a small act of kindness or a lesson you are still learning can be the beginning.
The aim is not to find the most impressive speaker. It is to create a room where people can feel seen, heard and inspired — without having to compete for attention.
Real-life storytelling, not a talent competition
A personal story does not have to be extraordinary to matter. It might be about moving to Dubai and missing home, starting again after a setback, caring for a parent, raising a child, or finding friendship in an unexpected place. Joy belongs here too. So do humour, gratitude and the ordinary moments that quietly change us.
Think of a patient finding words beyond a diagnosis, an animal rescuer remembering the one life they could help, or a member of hospital staff telling a story from the person behind the uniform. These are invitations, not accounts of specific participants. Nobody needs to reveal a painful experience to earn a place in the room.
Music and spoken word can sit alongside personal stories in the UNMUTE experience. But the microphone is not only for performers. It is for a human voice, offered with care, and a community willing to listen.
What happens at an UNMUTE storytelling evening?
The UNMUTE experience brings together personal stories, spoken word, acoustic music and guided community conversation. Its five-step Method is Speak, Listen, Understand, Connect and Act: share what you choose, listen without fixing, sit with another person’s reality, notice common threads, and carry that understanding beyond the room.
One chair remains empty all evening. The Empty Chair honours the absent, the unheard and the story that is not yet ready to be spoken. It reminds us that belonging is not only about the people holding the microphone; it is also about the people we have not yet reached.
Listening is participation. If a microphone feels like too much today, you can begin by listening. You can also ask the team about sharing a written story or a video rather than speaking in front of a room.
A softer room, with clear boundaries
The UNMUTE rules of engagement call for listening without judgment, debate or unsolicited fixing. The gathering is not a sales pitch, a political platform or a place for religious promotion. Respect for the storyteller matters more than the listener’s wish to offer an answer.
Share only what you feel comfortable sharing. Avoid identifying another person or disclosing their private information without permission. Before submitting a written story, video or recording, read the consent terms and ask the team how your contribution may be used. Do not assume that speaking at an event and agreeing to publication are the same thing.
UNMUTE is a community gathering, not therapy or a substitute for professional mental health care. You do not have to speak about trauma, explain your silence or promise to leave feeling different.
How to prepare your first real-life story
Begin with one moment rather than your whole life. Where were you? What happened? What stayed with you? A clear memory is often easier to share than a long list of achievements or lessons.
Use your own words. You can write a few notes, practise with someone you trust, and leave out anything that feels too private. There is no need to manufacture a dramatic ending. Sometimes the most honest closing is: I am still learning.
Ask the UNMUTE team about the particular evening’s format and speaking time before preparing. Registration, storyteller places and any recording arrangements should be confirmed with the team rather than assumed.
Join UNMUTE in Dubai — or bring the room to your community
To express interest in Dubai storytelling events, use the Join Community form on the UNMUTE home page. Choose the role that fits you: participant, story contributor, volunteer or ambassador. If you prefer to begin privately, WhatsApp Dr S Pujah on +971 58 556 5111 and ask about sharing your story.
For schools, colleges, workplaces, hospitals, women’s groups and community organisations, the Partnerships page is the place to start a hosting conversation. A venue partner, food partner, sponsor or thoughtful introduction can help make room for voices that are too often overlooked.
This is an invitation to register interest, not a dated event announcement. Ask the team for the next confirmed Dubai date, venue, availability and any participation cost before making plans.
Dubai has room for another kind of microphone. One that does not ask how well you perform, but what you would like someone to hear. Bring a story if you are ready. Bring your listening if you are not. Both are ways of belonging.

Do I need public speaking experience to share a story?
No polished performance is required. Start with a lived experience you feel comfortable sharing and ask the team about the format and speaking time for the particular evening.
