Dr S Pujah — 14 Years of Community Building Across Five Continents

This is not a résumé. This is a letter from the middle of a life spent gathering people into rooms and asking them soft questions. Fourteen years, five continents, and the same discovery in every one of them — the human being is desperate to be heard, and terrified of speaking. Everything I have ever built has been an attempt to lower the price of the second so we can afford the first.

By Dr S Pujah · Founder, UNMUTE

Where it began

It began in a village hall in Tamil Nadu with eleven women, one kerosene lamp, and a question — what is the thing you have never said out loud? Nobody answered for the first forty minutes. Then one woman spoke. Then all of them did. I walked home that night and knew what the rest of my life was going to be.

I was twenty-four. I did not have a framework. I did not have a funder. I did not have a name for the work. I only had the memory of that room and the certainty that this — this quiet, this listening, this permission — was medicine.

What five continents taught me

Africa taught me rhythm. In every gathering I held from Nairobi to Kigali, there was a drum, or a hand clapping the pattern of a heartbeat, and the story rode on the rhythm. I learned that the body must be present for the voice to arrive.

Europe taught me stillness. In circles I held in London, Berlin, Amsterdam — often with refugees, often with survivors — the story only arrived after long silences that a facilitator had to be brave enough not to fill.

The Americas taught me humour. From Mexico City to Toronto, laughter was the door the hardest stories walked through. If a room could not laugh, it could not weep.

Asia taught me lineage. In every circle from Chennai to Colombo to Manila, the ancestors were in the room, and any invitation to speak had to first honour the ones who came before.

And then the Gulf taught me something I had not known — how to hold a room where every person in it had left their homeland. This is the work of UNMUTE in the UAE. It is the work of building belonging in a city of arrivals.

Why UNMUTE, why now

For thirteen years I held circles under different names — Story Circles, Voice Rooms, Sisterhood Evenings, Grief Gatherings. When I moved to the UAE, it became clear that this country, more than any other I had lived in, needed a single, simple, repeatable format that a school, a hospital, a company, a mosque or a majlis could hold with dignity and safety.

UNMUTE is that format. It is a ninety-minute chapter. It has an empty chair, five soft questions, one facilitator, one rule of engagement. It can be held by a trained twenty-year-old or a seventy-year-old surgeon. It works in a village hall and it works in a fifty-fourth-floor boardroom in DIFC.

The name UNMUTE came from a young person in one of our first Dubai circles. She said — most days I feel like the mute button is stuck on me. Tonight it lifted. That is the name. That is the whole point.

What is next

Fifty chapter cities by 2028. A thousand trained facilitators. A permanent Story House in the UAE where any person, any age, any nationality, any Thursday evening, can walk in and be heard for one hour by strangers who will become, for that hour, a community.

If any of this speaks to you — as a host, an ambassador, a partner, a story-sharer, or simply as a person who needs an evening — the door is open. The chair is waiting.

Fourteen years in, the discovery has not changed. Give a person a chair, an empty chair beside them, five soft questions and a listener — and something in them comes home. This is the whole of the work.
